Trillian
Trillian might be just what you are seeking if you are looking for a chat client that is stand-alone, yet skinnable, and full-featured at that. This chat client can support IRC, Yahoo Messenger, MSN, ICQ, and AIM. Though standard features are available with Trillian use(such as privacy settings, SMS support, AIM/ICQ encrypted messaging, proxy support, AIM direct connection, typing notification, server-side contact importing, multiple connections for one network at the same time, buddy icons, chat rooms, group chats, file transfers, and audio chat), there are also certain Trillian capabilities that do not come with original network clients.
It is great that Trillian can give unique types of functionality but will not force you to use unwanted spyware, pop-ups, and software nor take away your home page. Some examples of functionality that come with Trillian are: systray notifications, file transfer shell extensions, emotisounds, emoticons symbols, docking, and the advanced automation system for triggering certain events.
